Shear line to bring heavy rains, thunderstorms to most of S. Luzon, Visayas from Jan. 9 to 11 — PAGASA

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Wednesday, Jan. 8 said that scattered rains and isolated thunderstorms will continue to affect most of Southern Luzon and the Visayas from Thursday, Jan. 9, to Saturday, Jan. 11, due to the prevailing shear line.

PAGASA Weather Specialist Benison Estareja explained that the shear line, an imaginary line where the cold winds from the northeast monsoon (amihan) meet the warm winds from the Pacific Ocean (easterlies), is a common weather phenomenon during the peak of the amihan.

On Thursday, moderate to heavy rains (100 to 200 millimeters) are expected in Camarines Sur, Albay, Catanduanes, Sorsogon, Northern Samar, Samar, and Eastern Samar.

From Friday to Saturday, moderate to heavy rainfall will likely persist in Albay, Sorsogon, Samar, and Eastern Samar.

Meanwhile, Northern Samar may experience heavy to intense rainfall, exceeding 200 millimeters.

Estareja also warned that other areas, including parts of the Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, Caraga, and some areas of Calabarzon, may experience heavy rainfall in the coming days.

Meanwhile, he said cooler weather with mostly cloudy skies and light to moderate rains will persist over the rest of Luzon.

Due to the influence of easterlies, isolated thunderstorms are expected to affect Mindanao, especially in the Caraga and Davao regions.
