Rains to persist over parts of Luzon due to ‘amihan’, shear line

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Sunday, Jan. 5 that several areas in Luzon may continue to experience light rains, while the rest of the country is expected to have fair weather over the next 24 hours.

The northeast monsoon, locally known as “amihan,” will bring cloudy skies and rain to Batanes and Babuyan Islands.

Cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and isolated thunderstorms may affect Cordillera Administrative Region, the rest of Cagayan Valley, Aurora, and Quezon due to the shear line—a weather system that forms when cold winds from the amihan collide with warm winds from the easterlies.

PAGASA warned that flash floods and landslides are possible in areas affected by the amihan and shear line due to moderate to heavy rains.

Meanwhile, the shear line may bring partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms to Ilocos Region and the rest of Central Luzon.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country are expected to experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers, caused by localized thunderstorms.

PAGASA also warned of potential flash floods or landslides during severe thunderstorms.
