OCD: Crew of sunken cargo ship in Northern Samar found dead

After nearly a week-long search operation, authorities have finally found the body of the missing crew of MV Jerlyn Khatness, a cargo ship which sank off Lavezares, Northern Samar last Dec. 30.

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said the remains of the 64-year-old crew were recovered in Brgy. Magcaraquit, Masbate – around 64 kilometers from Lavezares town – on Saturday, Jan. 4. His identity was withheld by the PCG upon the request for privacy of his family.

“[T]his was confirmed by his crewmates per the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG). The transport of the body is currently being facilitated by the company, according to the latest updates,” the OCD said.

The discovery raised the number of death toll to two. The first fatality, a 30-year-old male crew, was found floating in the vicinity waters of Biri, Northern Samar. 

Meanwhile, 13 other crew members were rescued.

The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) has issued a Notice of Suspension for the Cargo Ship Safety Certificate (CSSC) of the vessel MV Jerlyn Khatness pending the results of an investigation to determine details of the incident.

Furthermore, aerial and maritime search and rescue operation by the Philippine Air Force (PAF) and PCG in the area has already been concluded.

The OCD extended its condolences to the families of the victims and stressed the importance of safety precautions when embarking on a maritime travel, particularly under adverse weather conditions.

MV Jerlyn Khatness was delivering cement from Naga City, Cebu to San Jose, Northern Samar on Dec. 30 when it was battered by big waves, causing it to sink.
