Maintenance eyed for unfinished P2.2-B Iloilo road

ILOILO CITY – Maintenance is being eyed for an unfinished P2.2-billion road traversing this city and neighboring town of Oton that has been trashed while being used as an illegal parking lot and an offroad drinking area a week after it was inaugurated.

Mayor Jerry Treñas here said that the Iloilo City government will take over the maintainance of the Iloilo Sunset Boulevard from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

“To help maintain order, we will set rules and guidelines, including policies on anti-littering, alcohol consumption, and activity management in the area,” said Treñas in a statement.

DPWH-6 Regional Director Sanny Boy Oropel had earlier admitted that Iloilo River North Bank Road no longer has funds to finish the remaining work on the five-kilometer road, including the viewing decks. The DPWH also does not have funds for maintenance of the scenic road.

The Iloilo City government will coordinate with the local government unit of Oton as part of the road is located in the municipality's physical boundaries.

The Iloilo Sunset Boulevard was a project lobbied by former Sen. Franklin Drilon who hails from Iloilo.
