A grass fire struck Carasi, Ilocos Norte which has so far affected 300 hectares of land, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) reported.
The grass fire occurred in a mountainous area along the Barasan River in Barangay Virbira around 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30.
As of 8 a.m. Friday, Jan. 31, firefighters continued to battle the blaze, based on a footage shared by the OCD.
Photos provided by the OCD also showed thick plumes of smoke billowing from a distance as the grass fire razed the area throughout the night.
Authorities were battling the blaze to prevent it from reaching Mt. Lammin in Piddig town, which was closed to visitors two weeks ago to prevent grass fires despite its status as the the home of the largest coffee plantation in Ilocos Region and relatively cold weather which makes it an emerging tourist attraction in the province.
