EJ Obiena opened his indoor season with a bang after capturing the silver medal in the International Jump Meeting Cottbus 2025 in Germany on Wednesday, Jan. 29 (early Thursday, Philippine time).

The two-time Olympian pole vaulter cleared 5.65 meters to finish behind eventual winner and fellow Olympian Sam Kendricks of the United States, who registered a season-best 5.75m on his third attempt.

Obiena started at 5.40m, which he cleared with ease, and had no trouble clearing the next heights at 5.55m and 5.65m.

He passed 5.70m and immediately went on to 5.75m, but was unsuccessful.

Local bet Bo Kanda Lita Baehre claimed the bronze medal via countback after he, Obiena and Belgium’s Ben Broeders registered identical 5.65m heights.

Latvia’s Valters Kreiss finished fifth also via countback with 5.55m, while United States’ Austin Miller and Germany’s Torben Blech shared sixth also with 5.55m.

Meet record holder Piotr Lisek of Poland and Czech Republic’s David Holy finished eighth and last with 5.40m.

Now ranked No. 4 in the world, Obiena seeks a strong year after his outdoor season last year was cut short due to a recurring back injury.

Last year, he posted a season-best 5.97m in Poland, though he holds the Asian and national record of 6.00m he registered in Norway in 2023.
