1 dead, 5 injured in jeepney hold up; robber arrested, beaten by bystanders

A female passenger died while five others were injured after they jumped from a moving jeepney during a robbery hold-up along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City on Wednesday, Jan. 29.  

The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. when a man reportedly boarded the jeepney in the Don Fabian area. Shortly after, the suspect brandished a knife and announced the hold-up.  

According to the jeepney driver, they were cruising along Commonwealth Avenue when the robbery took place. The 29-year-old victim initially resisted handing over her bag as it contained her identification cards.

However, she relented when the suspect threatened to stab her.  

Meanwhile, other passengers, including the driver’s companion, jumped from the vehicle to escape the robber.

The driver’s companion, who was carrying nearly P1,000 in earnings from the day’s trips, was among those injured.

After the robbery, the suspect fled the scene but was chased and apprehended by bystander who reportedly beat him up before the authorities arrived.  

The victim was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

The cause of her death has yet to be determined.  

Authorities recovered from the suspect the stolen bag and the knife used in the hold-up.

The city’s Task Force Disiplina arrived at the scene to find the suspect being subdued by the crowd.  

The suspect, who sustained injuries to various parts of his body, was later identified as a previously convicted thief.

He will face charges for robbery with homicide and physical injuries.  

The identities of the victims and the suspect have been withheld by authorities as the investigation continues.
