Virus spreading in China 'fake news' — embassy

The Chinese embassy in Manila has denied claims circulating on social media that there is now an outgoing outbreak of a new virus in China.

“Fake news,” it said Friday, Dec. 3.

The embassy’s statement came amid social media posts that a virus called HPMV is supposedly affecting citizens and overwhelming hospitals there.

Some posts also claimed that China even already declared a state of emergency.

The Philippine Department of Health (DOH) already warned the public about sharing such claims.

“Reliable sources currently do not support circulating posts on social media about an alleged international health concern,” it said.

“There is no confirmation from either the cited country or the World Health Organization (WHO),” it added.
