Welders die after being trapped inside burning ship in Navotas

Two male welders died after being trapped in a burning storage room of a ship that was undergoing repair in Barangay San Jose, Navotas City, on Monday, Jan. 27.

According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the fire reached the first alarm at around 9 p.m. and was extinguished at around 2 a.m.
The BFP reported that the bodies of the victims were discovered in the storage room, located above the ship’s ballast area.
Initial investigation showed that the two welders were working in the storage room which was being used as storage are for life vests and mattresses when the fire broke out.
Authorities confirmed that around 20 to 25 workers were on site at the time of the incident and who were assigned to various parts of the ship.
The BFP is continuing its investigation to determine whether the contractor violated any provisions of the fire safety code.
The identities of the victims have been withheld by authorities as the investigation continues.
