'Tool for empowerment': DepEd advocates responsible, ethical use of AI

As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly integral to modern education, the Department of Education (DepEd) underscored the importance of ethical practices to ensure that this powerful technology empowers both students and educators.

In a statement, DepEd emphasized its commitment to championing the responsible use of AI in schools, highlighting its potential to revolutionize teaching and learning.

“Let us champion the use of AI as a tool for empowerment, not replacement,” said Undersecretary and Chief of Staff lawyer Fatima Lipp Panontongan.

By responsibly integrating AI into classrooms, DepEd said it aims to enhance digital literacy, foster critical thinking, and prepare learners for the future of work in an AI-driven world.

“Let us equip our youth with the wisdom to use it responsibly,” Panontongan said. “Together, let us create a future where technology amplifies human potential rather than diminishes it,” she added.

2025 IDE

DepEd promoted the responsible and ethical use of AI during the celebration of this year’s International Day of Education (IDE).

With the theme “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation,” DepEd celebrated IDE at the DepEd Central Office last week.

Observed every year on January 24, IDE seeks to rally support for education by urging individuals, civil society, and policymakers to take meaningful action in ensuring access to primary and secondary education for all children and promoting greater youth involvement in education.

The event, which also featured exhibits on AI and education from various partners, was graced by representatives from UNESCO, SEAMEO INNOTECH, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), UNICEF Philippines, and UNESCO Jakarta.

Partnerships

DepEd emphasized its commitment to integrating AI and technology in education by collaborating with various EdTech companies aligned with President Marcos’s vision of harnessing the potential of Filipinos.

During the event, DepEd highlighted its partnership with Khan Academy through Khanmigo, an AI-powered educational assistant.
“We are heading in the right direction by embracing the power of EdTech to address common learning delivery challenges,” Panontongan said.

“It is our duty to ensure that the next generation—be it Gen Z, Alpha, Beta, or beyond—is nurtured, informed, and inspired,” she added.
