Teachers call for a 'balanced approach' to controversial sexuality education program

A group of teachers, on Monday, Jan. 27, called for a “balanced and consultative approach” to the proposed Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) program and its current implementation under the Department of Education (DepEd).

“We recognize the importance of educating our children about these age- and development-appropriate topics, but this must be done carefully and with utmost preparation,” said Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC) National Chairperson Benjo Basas in a statement.

The House Committee on Basic Education is scheduled to hold a hearing on the controversial CSE.

For TDC, the implementation of the proposed CSE program should include the proper materials and, most importantly, intensive training for teachers who will handle the lessons.

“There should also be active involvement from teachers, parents, and communities,” Basas said.

Basas, one of the resource persons invited to the hearing, reaffirmed the group's support for the program and encouraged critics to carefully examine its content before making conclusions.

He pointed out that some opposition arises from exaggerated claims that do not accurately reflect the proposed policy or even the current DepEd program.

TDC noted that the House hearing is set to examine the details of CSE and address concerns raised by various sectors, including education advocates, parent groups, and religious organizations.

“We hope this hearing will lead to a well-informed and inclusive decision that ensures the implementation of a policy safeguarding the welfare of our children,” Basas said.
