2 men arrested for shabu, illegal firearm after police chase in Taguig

Two men were arrested for possession of shabu and an illegal firearm after a police chase in Taguig on Jan. 25.

The Taguig Police apprehended the two suspects identified as alias Joel, 36,, a delivery worker, and alias Christian, 31, near the Serenity Cemetery in Barangay San Miguel.

Their arrest followed a chase by the Tactical Motorcycle Riding Unit (TMRU) after police officers spotted the suspects riding a motorcycle along MLQ Street in Barangay Wawa.

A police officer saw Christian carrying a firearm tucked in his waistband. When they were approached by the police for verification, the suspects fled towards Barangay San Miguel.

The pursuit escalated as additional personnel from the Taguig Police SubStation 9 and TMRU joined the chase and finally cornered the suspects near the cemetery.

During the operation, the police recovered two plastic sachets containing shabu, weighing 9.1 grams valued at P61,880, a .357-caliber revolver without a serial number, three live rounds of ammunition and a motorcycle, which was impounded as evidence.

The two suspects will face a complaint for violations of Republic Act 9165 (Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002), Republic Act 10591 (Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act) and Republic Act 7166 (Omnibus Election Code). The complaint will be filed by the police with the Taguig City Prosecutor’s Office.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) implemented a gun ban for the May 12 national and local elections. The election gun ban is in effect from Jan. 12 to June 11.
