Vice President Sara Duterte hoped Filipinos would unite to overcome challenges as she honored the fallen 44 Philippine National Police-Special Action Force (PNP-SAF) commandos on the 10th anniversary of the Mamasapano clash on Saturday, Jan. 25.

In a statement, Duterte said the SAF 44 has become a symbol of heroism and sacrifice in the Philippines which, she hoped, would inspire Filipinos to unite.

“May the lessons learned from this tragic loss inspire us to work together to overcome challenges and strive for a safer and more secure future for all Filipinos,” she said.

According to Duterte, the Mamasapano Clash is a powerful reminder of the importance of national unity and our collective responsibility to protect the country's security.

“The memory of the SAF 44 lingers on in our hearts,” she said.

"On this solemn anniversary, we remember their sacrifice, bravery, and unwavering commitment to duty. Their courage in the face of unimaginable danger is a testament to their patriotism and dedication to serving our nation,” she added.

Vice President Duterte also acknowledged the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement and military personnel.

“As we continue to honor their lives and extend our deepest condolences to their families and loved ones, let us also acknowledge the complexities and dangers faced by those who serve in law enforcement and the armed forces,” she said.

The 44 policemen were killed in a firefight with Muslim rebels during an operation in a remote village in Mamasapano, Maguindanao on Jan. 25, 2015. 

The SAF operation, codenamed “Oplan Exodus,” successfully neutralized Malaysian bomb maker and Jemaah Islamiyah leader Zulkifli Bin Hir, alias Marwan.

On Feb. 21, 2017, President Rodrigo Duterte issued Proclamation No. 164, declaring Jan. 25 of every year as the Day of National Remembrance for the SAF 44.
