Speed skater Peter Groseclose receives IOC scholarship

“This incredible achievement recognizes Peter's dedication, hard work, and potential as he prepares to compete on the grand stage of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy,” PHSU wrote.

“We’re excited to see him push boundaries and proudly represent on the ice. Let’s cheer him on as he takes this major step towards his Olympic dream!” it added.

The scholarship aims to shoulder athletes’ – especially those who made waves in local and international competitions – financial needs for training, traveling and competing for Olympic events.

Also the scholarship was approved with the help of endorsement coming from PHSU, Philippine Olympic Committee and International Skating Union.

Several Filipino sports stars had received the same scholarship in the past, including Paris Olympics rower Joanie Delgaco and fencer Sam Catantan.

It was a huge boost for the Tarzana, California native who is eyeing to don the national tricolors in the 2026 Milano-Cortina Winter Games.

To bolster his Olympic bid, Groseclose must first perform well in the 2025 Asian Winter Games next month in Harbin, China where he joins fellow Philippine bets in figure skaters Isabella Gamez, Aleksandr Korovin, Sofia Frank, Paolo Borromeo, among others.

Last November, Groseclose made a historic bronze medal finish in Bormio, Italy as he became the first Filipino to reach the podium of an International Skating Union (ISU) Junior World Cup event.
