3 weather systems to bring rain showers across the Philippines

Several weather systems—including the shear line, easterlies, and northeast monsoon—are set to bring scattered rains, thunderstorms, and the possibility of flash floods or landslides across large parts of the Philippines in the next 24 hours, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Thursday, Jan. 23.

The shear line, a weather system where warm and cold air masses meet, will affect parts of Bicol Region, Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Aklan, Capiz, and Northern Samar.

PAGASA said cloudy skies with scattered rains and isolated thunderstorms will prevail in these areas.

The easterlies, or warm winds blowing from the Pacific Ocean, are also expected to bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms to Soccsksargen, Davao Region, Eastern Samar, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi.

PAGASA warned of the increased risk of flash floods and landslides in areas affected by the shear line and easterlies due to potential moderate to heavy rainfall.

Meanwhile, the effect of the northeast monsoon or amihan has slightly weakened. However, it is still expected to bring light rains to Cagayan Valley and Aurora.

In addition, Metro Manila, Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, and the rest of Central Luzon can expect partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains due to the amihan.

The rest of the country may experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms, mainly due to the prevailing easterlies.
