Tingog Party-list Rep. Jude Acidre, chairman of the House Committee on Overseas Workers Affairs, on Thursday, Jan. 23, pledged to advance measure that will protect Filipino seafarers following the Houthis' releas of crew members of a vessel in the Red Sea that carried 17 Filipinos.

Acidre says he is dedicated to pursue measures in the Congress, including the Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers, in a bid to "provide robust protection, equitable opportunities, and holistic support for our modern-day heroes".

Acidre was one with the nation in expressing relief following the safe release of 17 Filipino crew members of M/V Galaxy Leader after a year of captivity in Yemen.

“This remarkable development not only underscores the resilience and courage of our seafarers but also highlights the steadfast efforts of our government in ensuring their safe return,” he said.

The lawmaker also expressed his gratitude to President Marcos and other agencies of the government for their “unwavering dedication in navigating this complex and delicate mission".

"Their collaborative efforts, along with the support of the Philippine Embassy in Muscat, Oman, and our international partners led by His Majesty Haitham bin Tarik, Sultan of Oman and his government, have truly brought hope and renewed faith to the families of our seafarers and to the entire Filipino community," he said.

"This successful endeavor is a testament to our commitment to uphold the rights and welfare of every Filipino overseas, ensuring that no one is left behind," added the assistant majority leader.

Meanwhile, Kabayan Party-list Rep. Ron Salo thanked the private sector, particularly M/V Galaxy Leader's shipowner’s representative and manning agency, for not abandoning the seafarers and for continuously supporting them and their families.

He then urged the government to extend comprehensive assistance and support to the seafarers and their families during their recovery and reintegration.

"The Department of Health (DOH) should provide the necessary medical and psychological care to aid their recovery," he emphasized.

"The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) to continue offering support to the seafarers and their families by facilitating financial assistance, and other critical reintegration services," he added.
