2 strong quakes strike on January 23

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck Zamboanga del Norte at 11:41 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23, just hours after a 5.8-magnitude tremor hit Southern Leyte, based on a report from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The epicenter of the 6.1-magnitude quake was located 2 kilometers southeast of Siocon, Zamboanga del Norte, at a depth of 32 kilometers.

Initial reports indicate that the tremor was felt at Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Zamboanga City.

Phivolcs has warned of potential damage and aftershocks in the wake of the earthquake.

Earlier in the day, another earthquake measuring 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck San Francisco, Southern Leyte, at 7:39 a.m.

Phivolcs said the two quakes were separate events, caused by different local faults in their respective areas.
