Kanlaon Volcano ejects ash five times in the past 24 hours — Phivolcs

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said on Tuesday, Jan. 21, that Kanlaon Volcano has emitted ash five times in the past 24 hours and remains under Alert Level 3 due to ongoing “magmatic unrest.”

According to Phivolcs, the ash emissions, which lasted between eight and 58 minutes, produced plumes rising to 300 meters before drifting westward.

The volcano also continues degassing, with its sulfur dioxide emissions recorded at 3,733 tons on Jan. 20.

The increased volcanic activity also triggered 12 earthquakes, including five volcanic tremors that lasted between eight and 56 minutes.

Due to Kanlaon’s “intensified unrest,” the volcano remains under Alert Level 3. This alert level was raised following an explosive eruption on Dec. 9, which sent ash and pyroclastic density currents across parts of Negros Island.

Phivolcs warned nearby communities of the potential for sudden explosive eruptions, lava flows or effusion, ashfall, pyroclastic density currents, ballistic projectiles, rockfalls, and lahar flows during heavy rainfall.
