Mayor Jose Chubasco Cardenas urged residents to stay vigilant and follow the advisories of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

He reported that 7,721 internally displaced persons (IDPs) welcomed the New Year in evacuation centers.

The city government has ramped up its efforts to ensure readiness for any eventuality.

On Dec. 31, 2024, the local government held disaster preparedness simulation exercises emphasizing the importance of preemptive measures.

“I understand that preemptive measures might draw criticism, but safeguarding lives is a responsibility I cannot take lightly,” Cardenas said.

Kanlaon Volcano remains at Alert Level 3 with continued ash emissions signaling a possible eruption.
