577 road traffic incidents recorded from December 22 to January 2 — DOH

Driving without safety accessories was the leading cause of road traffic incidents recorded by the Department of Health (DOH) during the holiday season.

On Thursday, Jan. 2, the DOH announced that it had recorded 577 road traffic incidents between Dec. 22, 2024, and Jan. 2, 2025.

Using eight pilot areas, the DOH monitored road traffic incidents during this period.

Based on the latest data, the 577 incidents represent a 33.5 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024.

Deaths

According to the DOH, six deaths were reported, four of which were caused by motorcycle accidents.

Additionally, 108 incidents were attributed to alcohol consumption, 500 involved individuals not using safety accessories, and 415 were motorcycle-related accidents.

Campaign

To address these concerns, the DOH launched the “Ligtas Christmas sa Bagong Pilipinas” campaign in December to promote safe and healthy holiday celebrations.

One of the campaign's sub-campaigns, “BiyaHealthy Ngayong Pasko,” emphasizes that road safety is a shared responsibility. 

The DOH advised drivers to avoid fatigue, abstain from alcohol, wear helmets, adhere to speed limits, and avoid distractions such as mobile phones. 

In addition to “BiyaHealthy Ngayong Pasko,” the “Ligtas Christmas” campaign includes other initiatives, such as:

“Tamang Pagkain, Ehersisyo,” which promotes balanced diets, physical activity, and moderation to prevent diseases like diabetes and hypertension, as well as discouraging alcohol and tobacco use.

“Iwas Paputok,” which advocates for safe alternatives to fireworks and preparedness for potential accidents.
