Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan praised the Manila City Hall Task Force (MCHTF) for successfully intercepting an industrial truck involved in the illegal dumping of garbage along Mel Lopez Boulevard in Tondo, Manila.

The mayor also called on residents to report and, if possible, document such activities to ensure accountability and swift action against those responsible.

She said the incident happened on the evening of Thursday, January 9, when the Department of Public Services (DPS) reported the unlawful disposal of waste by a truck bearing plate number RJ-899 in Barangay 105.

The dumping was caught on video, which led to an investigation by the MCHTF.

According to the MCHTF’s report, the truck was traced to a junk shop operator and resident of Aroma Compound, Barangay 105, Tondo.

The operator admitted that two of his employees, aged 60 and 24, were responsible for the illegal activity.

The truck was subsequently impounded at the Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau's Central Impounding Station.

The two employees were charged with violations under Republic Act 9003, also known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, and the case has been forwarded to the Manila Prosecutor's Office.

In her statement, Mayor Lacuna-Pangan expressed her concern over potential sabotage aimed at undermining the city’s garbage collection efforts.

She emphasized the importance of vigilance in preventing similar incidents and encouraged residents to report any such activities to the DPS through their dedicated landline at 5310-1232.

The mayor further lamented that some individuals were resorting to such actions to create the false impression that the city’s waste management system is failing.

"It's disheartening that in the midst of dirty politics, the health of Manila residents is being compromised by the reckless dumping of trash. We should not prioritize personal interests over the well-being of the public," the mayor said.

The mayor also noted that the city had recently contracted two new garbage collection service providers after the previous contractor, Leonel, failed to participate in the bidding process for unclear reasons.

Despite their contract ending in Dec. 2024, Leonel reportedly ceased its garbage collection operations during the final days of the year, leading to a 400 percent increase in the volume of uncollected waste throughout the city.

The local chief executive assured that the Manila city government is committed to resolving the issue and preventing further disruptions to the city's waste management system.
