BACOLOD CITY – Five Visayan leopards were rescued from a suspected wildlife trafficker at the Bredco port here on Thursday, Jan. 16.

Police said they received information that alleged wildlife species were being transported from Mabinay, Negros Oriental for delivery to Manila.
Lawmen, the Philippine Coast Guard, and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources conducted an inspection at the seaport to verify the report.
They apprehended the suspect, 38-year-old Ricky, for violation of Republic Act 9147 (Wildlife Conservation and Protection Act). The law prohibits the collection, possession, and trade of wildlife without appropriate permits to safeguard endangered and vulnerable species.
Recovered from the suspect were two male adult Visayan leopards, one female adult Visayan leopard, and two young male Visayan leopards.
These animals have been turned over to the DENR Community Environment and Natural Resources Office-
Bago City. These species are found on the islands of Negros, Cebu, and Panay.
According to the CENRO-Bago City, arrangements are being made for their rehabilitation and possible release back to their natural habitat.
The CENRO-Bago City reiterated its call to the public to report any activities involving the illegal collection, transport, or trade of wildlife.
The Coast Guard Southern Visayas urged the public to report any illegal wildlife activities to authorities to help safeguard the country’s natural heritage.
