The Philippines welcomed the long-awaited ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas and the release of hostages.
“The Philippines welcomes the announcement of the long-awaited ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas and the release of hostages in Gaza," the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said in a statement on Friday, Jan. 17.
It also called on all parties to ensure that they adhere to their obligations in protecting civilians and in the facilitation of humanitarian assistance.
"The Philippines calls upon all parties to adhere to their obligations under international law, with particular emphasis on the protection of civilians, especially women and children, and the facilitation of humanitarian assistance to all those in need," the DFA said.
The DFA added that the Philippines also reaffirmed its commitment to a two-state solution in addressing the rights of civilians in the war.
"The Philippines reaffirms its steadfast commitment to a two-state solution that addresses the rights and needs of both Palestinian and Israeli civilians, with the aim of achieving a just, lasting peace and security in the region,” the DFA stated.
Mediators announced on Wednesday that Israel and Hamas have agreed to pause the devastating war in the Gaza Strip which began in October 2023. The deal included the promise to release hostages held by militants in Gaza and Palestinian prisoners in Israel, and to allow people displaced in Gaza to return to what remains of their homes.
