BARMM marks sixth anniversary on Jan. 21

DAVAO CITY – The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao is celebrating its sixth founding anniversary on Jan. 21 with the theme “Salamat BARMM:  Pagpupugay sa Anim na Taon na Paglilingkod sa Bangsamoro.”

Anniversary events – medical missions, sports activities, trade fairs, cultural presentations, and essay writing and photo essay contests – will be held from Jan. 20 to Jan. 24.

The Bangsamoro region was created following the plebiscite on Jan. 21, 2019 that replaced the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. Among the significant highlights of the Bangsamoro region’s establishment was the inclusion of Cotabato City as the region’s seat of government.

In 2024, 63 barangays from Cotabato, known as the Special Geographic Area (SGA), were added to the BARRM territory after a plebiscite that ratified the creation of eight municipalities.

BARMM is composed of the provinces of Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Sur, and Maguindanao del Norte.
