The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) assured on Thursday, Jan. 16 that the food being served at the “Walang Gutom” Kitchen in Pasay City is safe for consumption and specifically prepared for individuals experiencing involuntary hunger.
DSWD Social Technology Bureau (STB) OIC Division Chief Jason Oabel said the kitchen strictly follows a “first in, first out” system to ensure that donated food from private sector-partners is used before its expiration date and prevent potential harm to beneficiaries.
He added that allergen information is also being collected and recorded to prevent incidents such as allergic reactions.
Oabel explained that the DSWD only accepts food donations that are clean, safe for consumption, and not discarded or repurposed food, commonly known as “pagpag.”
“Ang kanila pong donation ay surplus, hindi po ito tira-tira at hindi po talaga ito nai-serve pa (Our donors provide surplus food, not leftover food, which has not been served yet),” he said.
He added that some donors donate packed meals.
In addition to pre-packed meals, Oabel said the Walang Gutom Kitchen also accepts raw ingredients like vegetables and other items suitable for cooking.
The DSWD continues to call for food donations from hotels, restaurants, food establishments, and individuals willing to contribute volunteer services to help expand the reach of the kitchen.
“We continue to appeal to our fellow citizens who wish to help, whether by donating food items or offering services, so we can reach and serve more people in need,” Oabel said.
