DMCI Power's Semirara wind project to begin operations by March

Off-grid energy provider DMCI Power Corporation (DPC), a DMCI Holdings subsidiary, announced that its first renewable energy (RE) project will begin operations this year.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) on Thursday, Jan. 16, DPC stated that the Semirara Wind Project aims to support mining operations on Semirara Island as the firm’s first clean energy asset.

In a briefing, Christopher Gotianun, vice president and chief business development officer of Semirara Mining and Power Corporation (SCPC), said that operations are set to begin by March.

“I think it should be the biggest single unit, the wind [power project],” he told reporters. “[Wind projects] need one year of performance testing, but it’s already generating power… About 32 million kilowatt-hours (kWh),” he said.

Aside from this, DPC is looking forward to increasing its installed capacity by 27 percent through 43 megawatts (MW) worth of projects in the pipeline.

In 2024, DPC’s energy sales rose by nine percent due to increased demand and a power plant that had gone full swing.

Last year, the firm delivered 491.2 gigawatt-hours (GWh), driven by a shift in demand in island provinces such as Palawan, Masbate, and Oriental Mindoro.

Its Palawan Thermal Power Plant, with a 15-megawatt capacity, also began full operations in 2024 and has been supplying reliable energy to its constituents since August 2023.

Antonio Gatdula Jr., president of DPC, said that last year’s performance was a record high for the power firm since it started operations in Masbate in 2010.

“2024 was a breakthrough year for DMCI Power as we achieved record-high energy sales and ensured reliable operations across all our plants. The sustained growth in demand highlights our critical role in powering off-grid areas,” Gatdula said.

Currently, the company has about 159.8 MW of installed capacity and has been operating thermal, bunker, and diesel power plants in the three provincial islands.
