The Department of Education (DepEd) on Thursday, Jan. 16, highlighted its ongoing efforts to prepare learners for the future.
At the Annual Educators' Congress (AECON) 2025, DepEd Undersecretary Peter Irving Corvera delivered a speech on behalf of Secretary Sonny Angara, emphasizing the importance of equipping learners with the necessary skills and tools to succeed in an ever-evolving global workforce.
“The game is changing for our learners,” Corvera said. “To remain competitive, we need to ensure their technological literacy, much like athletes mastering new skills,” he added.
The annual AECON provides a platform for educators from both the public and private sectors to address the challenges facing Philippine education and explore solutions to ensure quality education for all learners.
Demand for skills
Referencing the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025, Corvera highlighted the increasing demand for skills related to artificial intelligence and technological innovation.
He stressed that while 92 million jobs could be displaced globally, an estimated 170 million new roles are expected to emerge over the next decade.
DepEd’s priorities
To address these changes, DepEd is prioritizing the closure of infrastructure and digital gaps through Public-Private Partnerships (PPP).
DepEd recently set a goal to build 15,000 classrooms by 2027 through the PPP scheme.
Additionally, efforts are being made to provide electricity and satellite internet access to schools in underserved areas.
Meanwhile, training programs in English, Science, and Mathematics—supported by partnerships with Khan Academy and Frontlearners—are being implemented to ensure that teachers have access to global tools that will help elevate learning standards.
DepEd has also collaborated with TESDA to strengthen industry connections, improve work-readiness courses, and facilitate the issuance of national certifications.
“The support of our partners and stakeholders demonstrates that collaboration leads to extraordinary victories,” Corvera said.
