“Tandang Sora’s courage and motherly love live on."

With this remark, Quezon City 5th distinct Rep. PM Vargas welcomed Congress' passage of the measure declaring Jan. 6 of every year a special working holiday in Quezon City in commemoration of the proposed "Tandang Sora Day".

Vargas was referring to House Bill (HB) No.5850, which he principally authored. The bill seeks to honor the heroism of Melchora Aquino, more popularly known as Tandang Sora, on her birth anniversary.

“This is a momentous occasion that will remind us the martyrdom and sacrifices of Tandang Sora, who is a key figure in the liberation of our country," Vargas said in a statement Wednesday, Jan. 15.

"As a Novaleño, I could not be any prouder that her heroism took place in my beloved district in Novaliches,” Vargas said, who called Aquino the "Mother of the Revolution".

Novaliches serves as home of the "Katipunan Tree" or the duhat tree where Tandang Sora uplifted the Katipuneros, more so the sick and the wounded, including Apolinario Mabini.

The neophyte legislator also noted that H.B. No. 5850 hopes to inspire and pay tribute to all women who play significant roles in today’s society.

The measure was earlier endorsed for plenary approval by the House Committee on Local Government. It was approved by House members on second reading on Nov. 16, 2022, and then on third and final reading five days later.

It was passed by the other legislative chamber, the Senate, with amendments on Dec. 17, 2024.
