During his courtesy call on President Marcos on Wednesday, Jan. 15, Japanese Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi asked Marcos to sustain the bilateral ties between the Philippines and Japan, particularly in realizing a free and open Indo-Pacific.

"In today’s international community where divisions and conflicts are becoming more serious, the cooperation of like-minded countries is becoming increasingly important," Iwaya told Marcos during his visit at the Malacañan Palace.

"In order to realize a free and open Indo-Pacific, I would like to ask your Excellency's continued support in strengthening cooperation between Japan and the Philippines on security issues and other global affairs," he added.

The Japanese official also emphasized that the Philippines is a strategic partner of Japan as both sides share fundamental values and principles.

Marcos told Iwaya that his visit came at an opportune time, especially since Marcos had conversation with Japan Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru and United States President Joseph Biden on the different parts of their trilateral agreement. He said that the conversations between the Philippines, Japan, and the US must continue.

"I think that it is good that we continue these discussions, I hope that we will be able to have a chance, the Philippine side, to explain and show what has been done in terms of the agreement since the signing of the tripartite agreement," Marcos said.

Iwaya also expressed optimism in welcoming Filipino visitors in Japan this year.

"This year we will finally hold the Osaka-Kansai expo...We are very much looking forward to welcoming many visitors from your country. Once again let me reiterate my gratitude to having this opportunity today," the Japanese foreign minister said.
