Despite promising UAAP Season 87 campaign, Jack Santiago steps down as UE coach

Appointed in 2020, Santiago ended his stint as UE’s mentor after nearly breaking its playoff drought last Season 87.

He expressed his gratitude to the whole UE community for its continuous support and for allowing him to guide the men’s team.

“I sincerely thank UE for the privilege and opportunity to work alongside such talented student-athletes, dedicated staff and passionate supporters for the past five years,” said Santiago in a statement.

“The moments on and off the court and the relationships I've built with each of them shall remain close to my heart,” he added.

Under the tutelage of Santiago, the Red Warriors gradually soared in the standings that was eventually highlighted by their run last year.

UE opened its Season 87 campaign in style, winning five straight games – including a 75-71 escape over La Salle – after losing its first two contests, relying on Precious Momowei, Wello Lingolingo, Devin Fikes, Ethan Galang and Jack Cruz-Dumont.

Unfortunately in the second round, the Warriors yielded in their last five games which then paved the way for the Adamson Soaring Falcons to snatch the playoff berth.

“We in the [UE] community of never-say-die tribes of students, graduates, alumni, faculty members and officers wish to express our sincere, immeasurable gratitude for what you have accomplished in mentoring the [Red Warriors],” the school said.

“We thank you for not just the many feats you have brought out of our student-athletes but also for your countless sacrifices, care and big-heartedness, including numerous going-the-extra-mile, above-and-beyond provisions of nourishment,” it added.
