A new disaster preparedness tool in Ilokano was launched to shift the way local communities prepare for disasters.

A collaboration between the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University-La Union, and the University of the Philippines Visayas, the DANAS Project or Disaster Narratives for Experiential Knowledge-based Science Communication tool in Ilokano was unveiled on Tuesday, Jan. 14.

This new resource, which includes personal stories from communities in Northern and Central Luzon that have lived through earthquakes and tsunamis, offers geohazard information in a way that resonates deeply with Ilokano-speaking residents.

With its accompanying video package, the sourcebook ensures disaster messaging is both culturally relevant and accessible.

The launch also featured a presentation of the Sourcebook and video, followed by discussions on the project’s goals and expected impact.

It follows the success of last year’s releases in Cebuano, Hiligaynon, Tagalog, and Kapampangan, which have already proven essential for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management officers, educators, and local media across the country.

Phivolcs Deputy Director and DANAS project leader Ma. Mylene M. Villegas said the sourcebooks were designed to help communities connect with disaster preparedness information through local stories and languages.

“By publishing these Sourcebooks in local languages, we are making vital knowledge more accessible and culturally relevant,” she said.

The Sourcebook in Bicolano will also be launched this month.
