Former Himamaylan City Mayor Mencit Bascon, 88, passes away

BACOLOD CITY – Former Mayor Carminia “Mencit” Bascon of Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental passed away at the age of 88 in a hospital here before dawn on Tuesday, Jan. 14.

Her son, former Mayor Agustin Ernesto “Tinto” Bascon, confirmed the death of his mother.

Agustin said she suffered complications leading to multiple organ failure due to her old age.

She served Himamaylan for 24 years – 12 years as mayor, nine years as vice mayor, and three years as councilor.

People mourned her death and shared their fondest memories of her on social media.

The Our Lady of the Snows Parish in Himamaylan City also mourned her passing. The church described her as a remarkable leader and a compassionate servant.

“Mrs. Bascon’s unwavering dedication to Himamaylan and her profound love for its people have left an indelible mark on the hearts of many," the church said in a Facebook post, adding that her selfless service and vision for progress continue to inspire generations.

The church said that "as a pillar of strength, she was not only a public servant but also a woman of faith and integrity, guiding her leadership with values rooted in humility and care."

Her legacy of genuine public service and commitment to the common good will always be cherished and remembered, the church said. Her memory will live on in our hearts and in the history of Himamaylan, it added.

Her remains will be taken to Himamaylan City on Wednesday, Jan. 15.
