"Traffic will continue to flow at the Biliran Bridge for vehicles weighing five tons and below, as stated in the previous travel advisory," it said.

It added that if closures are necessary for the safety of the traveling public, drivers would be promptly informed through appropriate signages. Traffic advisories shall also be posted promptly.

DPWH-Biliran anticipates receiving P30 million for the bridge’s repair by the end of the month.

DPWH-Biliran District Engineer Irwin Antonio said the Biliran Bridge needs immediate repair based on the findings of their inspection on Dec. 24, 2024 that revealed integrity issues.

Based on the technical assessment conducted on the Biliran Bridge by engineers from the DPWH-Biliran and DPWH-Regional Office 8, among the other damage sustained by the bridge are under the deck slab, particularly on the bridge stringers, steel cross bracing, and build-up sections of Spans 4 and 3.

To address the issue of transporting goods to and from Biliran Island caused by the instability of the Biliran Bridge, the provincial government of Biliran, in partnership with the Biliran Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (BCCI), has contracted the LCT ASC Susan for barging services.

Gov. Gerard Roger Espina stated that the provincial government will cover the monthly barge rental expenses from their calamity fund. Fuel charges will be included in the daily operations through transport fees to ensure long-term sustainability.

BCCI manages the cargo ship operations to guarantee that the initiative remains a non-profit effort, benefiting all residents of Biliran.

Biliran has been placed under a state of calamity on Dec. 27 due to the bridge’s potential impact on the local economy and enable the provincial government to implement measures to stabilize prices of goods and essential commodities.
