From passion to paycheck: How students are turning creativity into careers

Gone are the days of billboards and TV commercials dominating the advertising landscape. In the Philippines, where social media usage is among the highest in the world, businesses are increasingly relying on digital platforms to reach consumers.

This shift has fueled an explosion of opportunities for those who can create engaging, shareable content, turning "likes" and "follows" into real-world profits.

This is where "content creation" comes in — the dynamic fusion of creativity and technology that's driving the digital marketing industry. And institutions like Asia Pacific College (APC), part of the SM Group, are at the forefront of this movement. Their Multimedia Arts program equips students with the skills to thrive in this evolving landscape, acting as a launchpad for stable and rewarding careers.

The demand for such skills is undeniable. According to industry data, digital marketing is one of the top emerging fields in the country. Jobstreet reported that digital marketing specialists earn an average of P30,000 per month.

A legacy of accessible education

Established in 1991 through a partnership between SM Foundation and IBM Philippines, APC has a long history of producing IT professionals. As a non-profit institution, APC reflects SM's commitment to quality education that leads to meaningful employment opportunities.

With 384 students currently enrolled, APC's Multimedia Arts program caters to the growing need for professionals who can navigate the intersection of technology and creativity. The program incorporates the latest industry practices and provides students with access to cutting-edge digital tools for 2D and 3D animation, digital sculpting, multimedia publishing, sound design, video production, and photography.

Project-based learning and mentorship

APC emphasizes project-based learning, allowing students to gain practical experience. "Our program stands out due to its focused and in-depth courses," says APC Executive Director Robert Besana. "The extensive studio time is crucial for skill development, and the mentor-apprentice relationship between professors and students fosters a dynamic learning environment."

Many APC instructors are industry professionals who bring real-world experience to the classroom. Jaime Pacena II, an award-winning filmmaker, teaches video production and related subjects. He often involves students in his projects, providing them with invaluable on-the-job experience.

Preparing graduates for success

APC's Multimedia Arts graduates are making their mark in various areas of the digital creative industry, including post-production, studio design, music video production, and TV directing. Some have even started their own studios.

Through its innovative curriculum and commitment to mentorship, APC is empowering the next generation of digital creatives and equipping them for success in this exciting and evolving field.
