Magsino reiterates support for Mary Jane Veloso on ex-OFW's 40th birthday

OFW Party-list Rep. Marissa “Del Mar” Magsino emphasized her commitment to supporting Mary Jane Veloso, who celebrated her 40th birthday at the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW).

Veloso, an alleged drug mule who spent more than a decade on death row in Indonesia for drug charges, was repatriated to the Philippines in December of last year.

“On her 40th birthday, we stand with her family and all advocates in renewing the call for justice,” Magsino said in a statement on Friday, Jan. 10.

Veloso’s parents and relatives gathered outside the CIW, where the OFW Party-list provided financial assistance and a birthday cake as a gesture of support. Migrante International and Bayan Muna were also present at the gathering.

“We are also thankful for the tireless efforts of Migrante International and Bayan Muna, who have been unwavering in their support for Mary Jane’s fight,” added Magsino.

Throughout 14 years of incarceration, Veloso maintained that she unknowingly committed the crime for which she was convicted, as she was a victim of human trafficking.

Veloso’s return to her homeland was made possible by the Indonesian government’s new policy that allows the transfer of custody over foreign prisoners to their countries of nationality.

She remains in custody while awaiting a resolution to her case and a potential pardon from President Marcos.

In an earlier statement, Magsino appealed a presidential pardon from Marcos to “restore Veloso’s dignity” and to affirm that the government is dedicated to fight for every overseas Filipino worker (OFW).

The congresswoman said she will continue to advocate for the protection and welfare of OFWs, especially those vulnerable to human trafficking and exploitation.
