Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) is undergoing a ₱200-million system enhancement program to provide a more seamless travel experience for motorists, NLEX Corp. said.
In a statement on Tuesday, Sept. 30, NLEX Corp. said it will spend ₱200 million to upgrade equipment and technology along the 94-kilometer (km) expressway.
NLEX Corp. President and General Manager Luis Reñon said this improvement initiative aims to ensure faster and smoother travel for motorists, while upholding strict road discipline.
“These upgrades will significantly improve the safety and reliability of the road network, boosting motorists’ confidence,” said Reñon.
NLEX Corp. said the enhancement program will cover the installation of additional CCTVs and speed cameras to enhance motorist experience on SCTEX.
The upgrade will also modernize computer systems and equipment to improve data processing in the toll systems.
Aside from these upgrades, NLEX Corp. said it has also been focusing on infrastructure improvements and expressway maintenance.
The tollway operator said it started this month the annual pavement repair program for SCTEX, alongside routine maintenance activities such as road furniture and signage repair, and drainage cleaning.
“These initiatives demonstrate NLEX Corp.’s commitment to improving its services and ensuring safer, more convenient travel for motorists,” the company said.
NLEX Corp., in partnership with SCTEX owner, state-run Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA), is also overseeing the repair and enhancement of Pasig-Potrero Bridge.
These new improvements come after the implementation of the third and final tranche of toll rate adjustments earlier this month.
Since Sept. 9, motorists traveling from Mabalacat City to Tarlac now pay an extra ₱25 for class 1 vehicles (cars and sport utility vehicles or SUVs), ₱51 for class 2 (buses and small commercial trucks), and ₱75 for class 3 (large trucks or trailers).
Motorists traversing the entire expressway will pay ₱66 more for class 1 vehicles, ₱131 for class 2, and ₱197 for class 3.
NLEX Corp., a subsidiary of Manuel V. Pangilinan-led Metro Pacific Tollways Corp. (MPTC), saw its toll revenues reach ₱25.32 billion in 2024, of which 78 percent were from North Luzon Expressway (NLEX), 18 percent from SCTEX, and four percent from NLEX Connector.
BCDA, which has a 50-percent stake in SCTEX, announced last month that it will spend upwards of ₱1 billion within the next two years for improvement works along the expressway.
Around ₱750 million will be spent on building three interchanges in Luisita, Hermosa, and Mabalacat, with the rest of the funding earmarked for a road-lighting project.
