Phivolcs warns of minor sea-level disturbance after 6.7-magnitude Cebu quake
PHIVOLCS
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) issued a tsunami advisory on Tuesday evening, Sept. 30, following a 6.7-magnitude earthquake offshore of Cebu province at 9:59 p.m.
Residents of Leyte, Cebu, and Biliran are advised to stay away from the coast until the advisory is lifted.
Phivolcs said those living near shorelines should move farther inland.
Boat owners in harbors, estuaries, or shallow coastal waters are urged to secure their vessels and move them away from the waterfront, it added.
Phivolcs also said boats already at sea should remain in deep waters until further notice.
Tsunami is defined as a series of sea waves commonly generated by under-the-sea earthquakes and whose heights could be greater than five meters.
It is erroneously called tidal waves and sometimes mistakenly associated with storm surges.
