Following the magnitude 6.7 earthquake that jolted Cebu and nearby provinces Tuesday night, Sept. 30, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) urged the public to remain vigilant and follow safety measures to minimize risks from possible aftershocks.
“Maging handa sa aftershocks (Be prepared for aftershocks),” Phivolcs said in its post-quake advisory, reminding communities that subsequent tremors may occur hours or days after a strong earthquake.
The agency advised the public to calmly and quickly choose the safest exit routes after tremors.
Also, Phivolcs urged those needing to evacuate to leave clear messages for family or rescuers about their whereabouts.
“Kung kinakailangang lumikas sa inyong tahanan, mag-iwan ng mensahe na nagsasaad kung kailan ka umalis at kung saan ka matatagpuan (If you need to evacuate your home, leave a message stating when you left and where you can be found),” it said, adding that an emergency kit must always be brought.
The agency further advised people to stay tuned to official announcements using battery-powered radios.
Meanwhile, Phivolcs also cautioned the public against taking risky actions in the aftermath of the quake.
“Huwag gumamit ng elevator (Do not use elevators),” it said, stressing that people should instead use stairs.
As such, it reminded the public not to enter damaged structures or bridges.
“Huwag gumamit ng telepono maliban kung kinakailangan (Do not use telephones unless necessary),” it added, cautioning that phone lines should be left open for emergencies.
The agency likewise urged the public to stay calm, avoid panic, and keep presence of mind.
Phivolcs also advised the public to inspect themselves and their companions for injuries, and to check for damaged water and power lines.
The agency said people must ensure hazardous and flammable chemicals are properly contained.
