A Facebook post by the Archdiocesan Shrine of Santa Rosa de Lima showed the church sustaining major damage.
“Earthquake alert! We are saddened to inform everyone that our Archdiocesan Shrine of Santa Rosa de Lima has partially collapsed!” the church said in a Facebook post.
Photos posted by the church on Facebook later on showed the inside of the church with the Blessed Sacrament and the Retablo image of Santa Rosa unscathed.

The church sought prayers after the earthquake.
“We humbly implore everyone in the entire Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cebu and the rest of the Philippines to please pray for all of us in Daanbantayan, Medellin, Bogo City, and San Remigio.
“A 6.3-magnitude earthquake stuck us just east of Daanbantayan and Medellin. Our—a heritage landmark—church partially collapsed,” the church said.
The earthquake sent residents across the Visayas rushing out of their homes and offices in fear.
Gov. Pamela Baricuatro appealed for calm following the earthquake.
"A strong earthquake has just struck Cebu. I urge everyone to remain calm and prioritize safety. Please move to open areas, stay away from walls or structures that may collapse, and stay alert for possible aftershocks," Baricuatro said in a Facebook post.
"Our disaster and emergency teams are now assessing the situation and are ready to respond. We are closely coordinating with local authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of all Cebuanos. If you have photos or updates on damages or areas that need assistance or response, please send them here. Let us keep each other safe. Padayon ta, mga Sugboanon. Together, we will get through this."
Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival suspended classes on Wednesday, Oct. 1, due to the earthquake.
"Following the earthquake earlier tonight, all classes in Cebu City are hereby suspended tomorrow as a precautionary measure. This will give way to the thorough inspection of all government buildings to ensure the safety of our constituents," Archival said in a Facebook post.
"We also request all private building owners and administrators to conduct immediate safety inspections and take precautionary measures to protect their tenants, employees, and personnel.
"Let us all remain vigilant and prioritize safety at all times. For any emergency, please call 911 directly.
"Stay safe, Cebu City," Archival, who immediately roamed around the city for inspections, said.
Also suspending classes due to the earthquake was the province of Bohol.
“Classes in both private and public schools in all levels and work in government shall be suspended on Oct. 1, 2025. Amping tang tanan kanunay! (Mag-ingat po tayong lahat! (Let us all be careful),” Gov. Aris Aumentado said.
The Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office appealed to people not to spread fake news about the earthquake
"A friendly reminder to all Cebuanos: Let us be responsible in what we share online. Please avoid spreading fake news or unverified information about what happened, especially during sensitive times. Before posting photos or updates, always make sure that they come from a reliable and trusted source.
"Misinformation can cause panic, confusion, and even harm to our community. Together, let us promote truth and awareness by being vigilant and mindful in the digital space. If in doubt, do not share. Verify first, because every click and share matters.
"Let us all be part of the solution, not the problem."
Netizens shared photos and videos of the earthquake which also damaged infrastructure, houses, and commercial establishments.
The earthquake was also felt in Sorsogon, Masbate, which was ravaged by tropical cyclone ''Opong" last week; Negros Oriental, and Siquijor.
