PAGASA: Eastern Philippines to experience more frequent thunderstorms this week
The easterlies will continue to bring generally fair weather across the country in the coming days, but more frequent thunderstorms are expected in the eastern sections until Friday, Oct. 3, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Monday, Sept. 29.
PAGASA weather specialist Daniel James Villamil said no low-pressure area has been monitored within the Philippine Area of Responsibility that could develop into a tropical cyclone as of Monday.
“Sa mga susunod na araw, inaasahan natin na mas mataas ang frequency ng thunderstorms sa mga nasabing lugar, lalo na sa hapon at gabi (In the coming days, we expect a higher frequency of thunderstorms in these areas, especially in the afternoon and evening),” Villamil said.
Severe thunderstorms typically last up to three hours and may bring intense rain, strong winds, lightning, and sometimes hail.
From Tuesday to Wednesday, Sept. 30 to Oct. 1, Villamil said fair weather will persist, but localized thunderstorms will be more frequent over the eastern section due to the easterlies, or warm winds from the Pacific Ocean.
Areas most likely to experience increased thunderstorm activity are Cagayan Valley, Aurora, Quezon, the Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, Caraga, and the Davao Region.
By Thursday to Friday, Oct. 2 to 3, mostly skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms may affect the eastern sections of Northern and Central Luzon, particularly Cagayan Valley and Aurora.
Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of the country will generally have fair weather during this period, although occasional afternoon or evening thunderstorms remain likely.
PAGASA advised the public to stay alert for thunderstorm advisories issued by the agency.
