MOST Rev. Alberto ‘Abet’ Uy greets well-wishers as he arrives in Cebu province on Sunday, Sept. 28. (Archdiocese of Cebu)
CEBU CITY – Archbishop-designate Alberto “Abet” Uy vowed to join the fight against anomalous infrastructure projects.
“Dinhi sa Cebu, kauban ko ninyo sa pagdumili sa ghost projects (Here in Cebu, I join you in rejecting ghost projects),” Uy said on Monday, Sept. 29.
Uy expressed his strong stand against corruption a day before his installation as the fifth Archbishop of Cebu, replacing Archbishop Jose Palma, who reached the canonical retirement age of 75.
Uy served as the seventh bishop of the Diocese of Tagbilaran City before he was chosen by Pope Leo XIV to replace Palma.
Uy arrived to a rousing welcome in Cebu province on Sunday, Sept. 28.
On Monday, the 58-year-old Uy graced various activities, including a reception lunch hosted by the Cebu City government.
During the event, Uy condemned ghost flood-control projects and vowed to stand with Cebuanos in fighting corruption.
Uy urged government leaders to push for “godly projects” that improve the lives of the poor, safeguard the environment, and promote genuine development and peace.
“What are those godly projects? Projects that uplift the poor. Projects that protect the environment. Projects that bring genuine progress and lasting peace. Projects that at the end of the day can make God smile,” Uy said.
Uy will be officially installed as the fifth archbishop of Cebu on Tuesday, Sept. 30.
