Nanette Ana Maria Villanueva unveils immersive solo exhibit and mother-son collaboration

The Fil-Am artist explores space, 'disciplined chaos,' and family ties in her latest works

Fil-American Nanette Ana Maria Villanueva, also known as Anama, will be staging two exhibits in different art galleries in Metro Manila in the coming weeks, showcasing the New York City-based artist’s practice that spans painting, mixed media, and large-scale works on paper
Nanette will be having a solo exhibition entitled “The Breathing Room: When Space Takes Form” at the West Gallery in Quezon City from Sept. 30 to Oct. 25.
“The Breathing Room” will take viewers to an immersive environment where drawing expands into space. Through monumental scrolls, delicate veils, and framed works layered with graphite and paper, Nanette explores how absence becomes form and silence transforms into presence. The exhibition embodies a contemplative rhythm—where mark-making is both breath and gesture, and where openness and density coexist in tension and harmony.
This new body of work reflects Nanette’s continuing exploration of what she calls “disciplined chaos,” balancing intuition with control. In transforming the gallery into a space of stillness and resonance.
“The Breathing Room” encourages visitors to pause, reflect, and encounter art not only as image but as atmosphere.
Then, starting Oct. 4, Nanette will be joined by her 20-year-old son Julian Raheb in presenting “Echoes in Two Voices: A Visual Dialogue Between Mother and Son” at the Kapitolyo Art Space in Pasig City.
The unique exhibition, which will run until Oct. 17, brings together two generations in conversation through art.
Nanette’s layered, expressive abstractions meet Raheb’s intricate pen-and-ink drawings, creating a dialogue between intuition and precision, spontaneity and structure. Placed side by side, their works highlight contrasts while also revealing shared sensibilities—gestures, rhythms, and images that echo across time, memory, and experience.
“Echoes in Two Voices” is not only a celebration of family and artistic inheritance but also an exploration of how distinct practices can mirror, challenge, and complement one another. Visitors are invited to witness a dialogue in visual form—where mother and son exchange perspectives, influences, and reflections through their art.
