BACOLOD CITY – This city has recorded its seventh leptospirosis death this year.
The victim was a 32-year-old dishwasher from Barangay Pahanocoy.
The City Health Office (CHO) said the victim was hospitalized on Sept. 9 after complaining of a headache.
He died the same day due to severe leptospirosis, with acute kidney injury listed as a secondary cause.
This city logged its sixth leptospirosis death in June – a 20-year-old resident of Barangay Sum-ag.
Other victims were a 52-year-old drainage cleaner from Barangay Villamonte (Jan. 25), a 47-year-old man from Barangay Banago (April 20), a 17-year-old from Barangay Bata (May), a 43-year-old from Barangay 2 (June 3), and a 57-year-old woman from Barangay Handumanan (June 9).
As of Sept. 20, the CHO has recorded 25 leptospirosis cases—a 38.9 percent increase compared to 18 cases and six deaths during the same period last year.
Barangays Villamonte and Handumanan reported the highest number of cases with three each, while Barangays Felisa, Banago, Estefania, and Mansilingan each logged two cases.
