PNP urges parents to protect children from bad influence after release of 55 minors in Manila riot
The Philippine National Police (PNP) urged the parents and guardians of the 55 minors arrested during the violent Manila protest last week to take an active role in guiding the children against persons or groups allegedly misleading them into breaking the law.
The 55 minors were among those brought to the police station after they were collared for allegedly attacking policemen and destroying properties during the September 21 protest action near the Ayala Bridge and in Mendiola.
“Parents and guardians must take an active role in guiding our youth while local officials and community leaders should help us provide safe and productive spaces for them,” said acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez, Jr.
He said the release of the minors, along with the 25 adults, is proof of the police respect to due process and legal procedures.
“The Philippine National Police respects due process and the rule of law. The release of the minors and adults involved was in accordance with established legal procedures. Our role is to ensure that those apprehended are properly turned over to the appropriate authorities, and that the safety and rights of everyone involved are protected,” said Nartatez.
“While accountability must be observed, the PNP also recognizes the need for rehabilitation and guidance, especially for the minors,” he added.
The minors, according to Nartatez, wre referred to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and concerned local government units for proper intervention and counseling.
As for charges filed against the adult protesters, Nartatez instructed investigators to coordinate actively with the prosecutor’s office to ensure that all case files and evidence are properly documented and submitted.
“This is to avoid unnecessary dismissals and ensure accountability under the law,” he said.
