A fishing vessel ran aground off Paluan town’s coastal waters in Occidental Mindoro, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported on Sunday, Sept. 28.
Fishing boat “Jishun 2” departed Barangay Tayamaan in Mamburao town on Sept. 23 but was met by tall waves, heavy rains, and strong winds due to Severe Tropical Storm “Opong”, an investigation showed.
The master of the vessel decided to seek shelter in the nearby Sitio Pamustusin, Barangay Harrison, approximately 44 kilometers from Barangay Tayamaan. The master attempted to maneuver amid rough sea conditions which caused the anchor line of the vessel to entangle with its propeller.
Eventually, the master lost control of the boat, leading to its grounding on a sandy seabed.
Personnel of the Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Paluan found the vessel approximately 10 meters from the shoreline of Sitio Pamustusin while conducting a coastal security patrol on Sept. 27.
Despite the beaching, there was no oil spill and all crew members were in good physical condition.
“We will extract the grounded vessel once weather improves,” PCG spokesperson Captain Noemie Cayabyab said.
Relief and recovery
Meanwhile, the PCG continued to conduct search and rescue, and early recovery interventions in areas hit by Opong.
Around 2,400 individuals were evacuated by the PCG in various areas nationwide.
Cayabyab said the PCG has also been actively supporting the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices (DRRMOs) and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in the distribution of relief goods to affected families.
The PCG has also lifted the no-sail policy after the storm’s exit but Cayabyab said the agency continued to monitor seaports nationwide.
As of 12 noon Sunday, there remained 148 stranded passengers in 14 ports in Southern Tagalog and Bicol.
There were also 62 rolling cargoes and 12 vessels that were unable to leave the port while 48 vessels and 11 motorbancas were taking shelter.
