The city government of Pasay City collected a total of 200 sacks or around 1.8 tons of garbage after the country was hit by typhoon Opong.
Pasay City Mayor Emi Calixto-Rubiano issued a clean-up drive at the Manila Bay shoreline last Saturday, Sept. 27, where piles of garbage and debris were found after typhoon Opong's onslaught.
Rubiano said the trash that washed along the shore of Manila Bay included plastic, driftwood and other debris that may pose environmental and health hazards.
She stressed the importance of maintaining the cleanliness and protecting the bay.
The mayor also said the clean-up drive is part of the city government’s ongoing environmental protection initiatives in line with the national government’s Manila Bay rehabilitation program.
Rubiano also urged residents to practice proper waste segregation and disposal to help prevent flooding and lessen the volume of garbage that ends up in Manila Bay.
