Why was the rich man condemned?

WORD ALIVE
In the gospel of this 26th Sunday, Jesus relates the parable of a rich man (Dives) and a beggar (Lazarus). They live in two different worlds.
The rich man is "dressed in purple and fine linen;" he feasts sumptuously everyday, while Lazarus covered with sores begs, hoping to eat from the crumbs that fall from the rich man's table (Lk 16,19-31).
Both the rich man and Lazarus have died. Their fortunes are completely reversed. Lazarus is now enjoying the higher position--he is in the "bosom of Abraham"--while the rich man is suffering in torment symbolized by the eternal torment in Hades (hell).
Note that the rich man was not punished because he was rich. What is condemned was his callousness, his insensitivity to help the needy beggar Lazarus.
Obviously the gospel message does not imply that poverty is a virtue and wealth an evil. With money you can do a lot of good, but you can do a lot of evil as well, like buy people, manipulate through kickbacks, briberies, corruption. and others just as what is going on in our governments.

Ask yourself: Am I selfish and insensitive to the plight of Lazaruzes around me? Is money all my sole concern even to the point of stealing and running away from taxes? Do I help the less fortunate in any way I can: be they house helpers, poor relatives, and charitable institutions?
As the Lord said, “What does it profit a man (or woman) if he or she gains the whole world but suffers the loss of one’s soul.”

Laughs to ponder. The dishonest runs away and hides his corrupt millions—under the table, over the table, including the table.”

A corrupt man offered a politician a new Mercedez car. “You know I can’t accept that,” the politician protested. “It’s bribery.”
The man pointed out that he could sell the car to the politician for ₱2 million. “In that case,” said the politician, “I’ll take two.”

St. Peter (to new applicant at the heavenly Gate): And what good deeds did you do during your lifetime? New applicant: Well, I once gave an old beggar a ₱100.
St. Peter: Anything else? New applicant: I’m afraid no more. St. Peter: Well, here’s your ₱100 back—you can go to Hell now!

National Migrants’ Sunday. We reflect on the plight of millions of overseas contract workers, migrants and their families.
We pray for all the people on the move, most especially Filipinos in the “diaspora” so that they will be instruments of the Good News through their humble and selfless service of God and people. (From Ordo).
