National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts Ricky Lee and award-winning director Joel Lamangan recently shared interesting trivia about the 4K restored version of "Jaguar." The film opened the 7th Sinag Maynila Independent Film Festival at Gateway Cinema in Araneta City.
Ricky, one of the film's screenwriters, believes "Jaguar" remains highly relevant 45 years after its initial release. He also shared a fun fact about the original movie poster.
"When we made the poster, of course, he was a security guard, so he had to have a gun. Because it was forbidden to show guns on posters at the time, unless they were painted white. But Lino didn't want that. So there was no gun. Our final poster just had him wearing jeans and leaning against a wall with graffiti," he said.
When asked about a potential remake, Ricky expressed, "It's possible, but I hope the restored version of 'Jaguar' will be circulated nationwide. I hope the moviegoers will support the restored version of 'Jaguar.'"
Direk Joel, who played a young reporter in the film, recalled that all the background cast members were from the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA).
The director shared, "Everyone in the community and everyone who went to the police were all members of the PETA Kalinangan Ensemble. I remember our training with Lino; he always said one thing: 'Make it real.' So what you saw from Tondo, they were really from Tondo. They were really from there. Lino explained the scene very well and how it would work. He was that detailed."
The Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) said that this 4K restored version of National Artist for Film Lino Brocka’s “Jaguar” premiered at the 16th Lumière Film Festival in Lyon, France, in October 2024.
This restoration was a collaborative effort between the Philippine Film Archive (PFA) and Cité de Mémoire.
"Jaguar" holds historical significance as the first Filipino film to be nominated for the prestigious Palme d'Or at the 1980 Cannes Film Festival. The story follows Poldo, a security guard who becomes entangled in crime while protecting a wealthy playboy, navigating moral dilemmas and tragic consequences amidst class disparity and the destructive pursuit of fame.
At the 7th Sinag Maynila Independent Film Festival, five full-length features, documentaries, and short films from both established and rising Filipino filmmakers were presented during a media conference held at Gateway Mall in Araneta City on Aug. 20. All official finalist films will be screened in select Metro Manila theaters from Sept. 24-30, 2025.
