National University averted a second-half collapse and fended off Far Eastern University, 84-68, to notch its second straight win in the UAAP Season 88 men’s basketball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Saturday, Sept. 27.
Boosted by a 72-57 victory over University of the East, the Bulldogs started strong anew but saw their 14-point halftime cushion disappear after the Tamaraws ignited a big run to take a 48-47 midway through the third quarter.
But NU quickly regrouped by tightening its defense and rediscovering its rhythm on offense to dominate, outscoring FEU, 29-16, in the fourth frame to seal the game and remain spotless with a 2-0 record.
NU leaned on its balanced attack with Jolo Manansala producing timely baskets in the final canto and finishing with 13 points, nine rebounds, two assists, one steal, and one block.
“Mindset lang namin is still the same, gutom lang kaming manalo, hangga’t maari ‘yon ‘yong gusto naming dalhin sa mga laro namin,” said Manansala.
Apart from Manansala’s effort, Omar John dazzled as well as he topscored with 16 points, nine rebounds, two steals and one block for the Jeff Napa-mentored crew. Jake Figueroa added 13 points with big numbers in other departments.
As FEU absorbed its second loss, Kirby Mongcopa came out with a breakthrough output of 16 points on top of eight rebounds, one assist, two steals, and one block, far cry from his two-point, seven-rebound, two-assist statline in their 86-83 loss to Ateneo in the opener.
Pasaol and Jorick Bautista cashed in 16 and 15 points, respectively, for FEU in a losing cause.
NU controlled the game since the opening quarter and doubled its lead in the following frame to build a comfortable 44-30 advantage going into the break.
The gap, however, was swiftly shrunk as the Tamaraws went off to a 14-0 run which was orchestrated by Bautista and Mongcopa.
That was the final FEU effort as John, Manansala, and Figueroa scored key baskets to put them ahead.
