MMDA sends disaster response teams to Masbate

Three teams from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will be deployed to Masbate which was the hardest hit area when typhoon “Opong” pounded Luzon and the Visayas with strong winds and heavy rains.
MMDA Chairman Don Artes said the three Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) are composed of 35 personnel from the Public Safety Division, Metro Parkways Clearing Group, and Road Emergency Group.
“They are tasked to ensure swift assistance to affected communities in the Masbate Province and provide necessary aid and to help the affected communities recover and rebuild,” said Artes.
Artes said the HADR teams are divided into three groups: one team will provide clean water to affected communities using water purification systems, one team will assist in road clearing operations, and one team will provide medical assistance.
The contingent is equipped with 40 water purifiers with additional filters and solar power sources, a generator set, 300 modular evacuation tents, various clearing tools and equipment such as chainsaws, among others.
Artes said they also dispatched two military trucks and an ambulance with a complete crew.
More than 380,000 people were displaced during the onslaught of “Opong”.
Police forces were instructed to help in the clearing operations to ensure the fast and smooth travel of all the necessary assistance from the national government to severely affected communities.
